A NEW bus service from the Denby Dale area to Barnsley is to be introduced for a trial period.

The new route – to Barnsley hospital – follows a successful Christmas bus scheme and will be jointly financed by Kirklees Council and West Yorkshire’s public transport authority Metro.

Clr Elaine Ward, who proposed the scheme, said: “I have received dozens of representations from people who cannot access the hospital services at Barnsley, and this is causing them great inconvenience. I hope local people will take this opportunity to use the new service.”

Clr Ward said the finer details of the route were still to be negotiated but she confirmed that an hourly service would run from Skelmanthorpe, Monday to Saturday, starting from July.

Clr David Hall, cabinet member for transport, added: “There has been a lot of work behind the scenes between Metro and Clr Ward in bringing this proposal forward, and I will be recommending to my cabinet colleagues that it is supported when it comes before us.

“This is a trial for a six-month period, and so the message to local people has to be 'use it or lose it', and I very much hope the service will be well patronised.”
