BIRDSEDGE

VILLAGE HALL: The Luncheon Club was well supported. At the next session roast pork will be served with apple sauce, roast potatoes and vegetables, followed by ginger pudding and custard. The Cumberworth FC Under-7s lost narrowly to Kirkburton on Saturday. The original Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds was shown to a small but appreciative audience in the hall. The Halloween party evening will be held tomorrow from 6pm. Admission, which includes drinks and snacks, is only charged for children. The bar is open for parents who are welcome to stay and enjoy food which will be available. Arrangements are being made for the bonfire next Saturday, November 5, from 6pm. There is no charge for the event, to be held on the ground at the back of the village hall. Traditional food and drinks will be served on the field and donations towards the fireworks will be welcome.

CHURCH: Last Sunday’s service was taken by Terry Frost. Bearing in mind the coming of Halloween, he told the children the spooky story of King Belshazzar and the writing on the wall, from Daniel 5. Later in the service Terry read Isaiah 6 - ‘Isaiah’s Commission’. After becoming a powerful and wealthy man with God’s help, King Uzziah turned his back on God, deciding he could manage without him. This applies to many people today who think there is no price to pay for fame and fortune. The next service will be taken by Malcolm Jacob.

HOSPICE SUPPORT GROUP: The 10th anniversary event for the group raised £220. Group members are pleased to report that in its 10 years’ existence £30,846 has been raised. Many thanks to all supporters. The planned November 12 coffee morning has been cancelled.
