CHARITY funds have been used to purchase ground-breaking machines made in Huddersfield, which can help prevent hair loss during cancer treatment.

Breast cancer charity Walk the Walk has granted 31 Paxman Scalp Cooling machines, produced at Fenay Bridge, to five hospitals thanks to money raised through its iconic Power Walking events.

For some cancer sufferers, the most distressing side effect of chemotherapy treatment is hair loss.

Scalp Coolers machines can help prevent or reduce hair loss for some patients undergoing certain types of chemotherapy.

The last three coolers to arrive in South Yorkshire make their way to Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield recently.

The charity also pays for hospital staff to be trained to use the coolers, as well as maintenance for three years.

Walk the Walk has raised more than £82 million for vital breast cancer causes, since it was launched 15 years ago.
