A promotion-winning school football team had a special coaching session with Town legend Andy Booth.

The former Town striker pulled on his boots for a visit to Moor End Academy at Crosland Moor.

Boothy put the year 9 squad, newly-promoted to Division One of the Huddersfield Schools FA Under-14 League, through its paces.

The team finished last season unbeaten, winning seven of their eight matches.

Top performers were leading scorers Markell Ebanks and winger Isan Safeer and goalkeeper Nyle Arundel.

The squad also includes: Osman Shaffique, Bally Uppal, Declan Foster, Jay Smith, Jack O’Connor, J’Kiel Hayden, Aran Garside, Byron Goodall, Mohammed Hosi, Ethan Denniss, Jacob Thomas and Sharooz Akhtar.

Training sessions are held every Thursday after school.

As well as playing in a more competitive league, the squad also have a new coach in teaching assistant Mike Pickering.

The holder of an FA coaching qualification, keen footballer Mike graduated from the University of Leeds this summer with a Sports and Exercise Sciences degree.

Mike is now working with his players to help them cope with the step up to the higher league.

Part of his bid to inspire and motivate led to the invitation to Town club ambassador Boothy.

Mike said: “I wanted to reward the lads for their hard work and commitment and to re-enforce that the key elements of any sport are preparation, practice and performance.

“The dedication, skills and attitudes gained through participating in team sport at school will stay with them, transferring from the playing field to their future studies, careers and personal lives.

“It was fantastic for the team to train with Andy. They’ve had a real insight into how professional players dedicate themselves to achieving success through hard work and determination, whilst still being able to have fun.”

Boothy then led an inspirational coaching session of ball skills, tactics and of tackling drills.
