YOUNGSTERS have been hunting down animals on safari in their own local woods.

Children at Mission Rescue, a summer holiday club for five to 10-year-olds, went on a mini beast safari in Cliffe Woods, at Clayton West.

The club, which has been around for almost 30 years, is run by volunteers from local churches.

Organiser, Andy Wickham, Kirklees Council’s countryside officer for Denby Dale Parish, said: “The safari comprised the children searching the woods in groups with their leaders to find any insects or creepy crawlies living in the wood.

“The children captured the beasts in containers and at the end of the session we identified what they had found, where the mini beasts had come from and why they were found in the habitat they were in. The activity was well received by the children and they really seemed to enjoy the experience.”
