A BUMPER crowd turned out for bonfire night in the Holme Valley despite the dodgy weather.

The annual display by the Holmfirth Rotary Club at the Sands Rec last Saturday attracted around 2,000 people and raised £3,000 for Rotary charities.

Don Wilkinson, president of the Holmfirth Rotary Club, paid tribute to organisers Paul Smelt and Mike Funnel and the local people who braved the soggy fields.

He said: “We had a brilliant turn out, the weather improved as the night went on.

“The actual firework display was one of the best we’ve had and really excited the crowd.

“It seemed to be bigger than before, you could tell from the crowd reaction,” he added.
