JUST a small correction; in the picture of the soldiers on Southgate the hotel on the right is not the Oxford but the Southgate Hotel. It stood opposite the bottom of Kirkgate, or, more strictly, the bottom of Rosemary Lane. The Oxford Hotel was on the same side of the road, but nearer to Seed Hill; in fact just about opposite where the soldiers were standing. It was a mock Tudor building, brick and half- timbered.
