IT’S been the scene of tragedy in recent years.

The main road from Meltham to Lockwood has seen a string of crashes, one sadly fatal, and it’s time something was done about it.

Now Kirklees Council is acting to improve safety along the B6108.

New anti-speeding measures are being introduced and they could be in place by the end of the month.

Among the changes will be mobile speed cameras and reducing the part of the road’s upper speed limit from 60mph to 50mph. Overtaking will be banned at one section and road signs will alert motorists when they break the speed limit.

It’s tough action on a busy road, but it’s clear something is needed as only last week a cyclist was injured, adding to what seems to be an ever-growing list of accidents.

Those familiar with the road may be a little too complacent, those unfamiliar with it will not be aware of its many twists and turns.

But while Kirklees Council is doing all it can to ensure safety, it’s up to motorists to do their bit too.

These measures will help, but only if motorists respect the road and drive sensibly and pedestrians cross the busy road at safe places.
