ONE barometer of the economic crisis and how the cuts are having a direct impact on people’s lives is the Welcome Centre in Huddersfield.

The centre provides vital food supplies for both individuals and families down on their luck who can’t afford to buy enough to eat.

They have now revealed the quite shocking statistic that the number of people turning to them in desperation has gone up by 50% over the last few years.

The reasons are many and varied from women and children fleeing domestic violence through to long waits for benefits to kick in if people have lost their jobs.

It just shows that the system can’t be working efficiently. With so many jobs still being lost people need the safety net of benefits quickly as many will have been in low paid jobs or domestic situations where they have been unable to put anything away ‘for a rainy day.’

Many now find that it’s pouring down on them and thank goodness for the Welcome Centre that manages to keep so many people going.

But for that to happen the Huddersfield community needs to continue to support the centre. You’ve done a wonderful job so far but please keep up the good work.

There are many out there who need your kindness now more than ever before.
