THIS year’s Local History Month is packed with exhibitions, events and activities throughout May and June, enabling local people to discover the past in new and interesting ways.

Kirklees Library and Information Centres and Museums have joined forces with Huddersfield University, West Yorkshire Archive Service and the Huddersfield Local History Society to bring together a rich and varied programme to savour.

Why not revisit a bygone age of piers, proms and pleasure beaches with the Secrets of the Saucy Postcards exhibition at Bagshaw Museum until September 30.

Or how about joining in the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of David Brown’s of Huddersfield at Tolson Museum from today to December 30?

Remember wash day at Grandma’s? Howard Robinson will bring back memories with his illustrated talk at the Local History Lunchtime Club at Huddersfield Library on Wednesday May 12.

Take a trip round Tolson Museum at night, with a chance to see behind the scenes on Saturday May 14. Or on the same evening you can visit Bagshaw Museum for their costumed tour of the home of the Sheards.

Nicholas Pollett will be introducing the work of the Marsden History Group at Huddersfield Town Hall on Monday May 17 and for those who like a bit of exercise with their history, join Frank Grombir on Saturday May 21 on a walk around Huddersfield town centre, looking at how the Polish community has contributed to the cultural, social, religious and economic life in the area.

On May 25 Huddersfield University will be looking at using oral history in a community project.

From May to August on Saturday afternoons Bagshaw Museum will be hosting a series of workshops, talks and walks looking at the lives of families in Batley and taking a trip across ‘The Pond’ on Tuesday June 1 there will be stories from North America at Bagshaw Museum.

On Thursday June 3 why not go along and find out about the subject of house history with the West Yorkshire Archive Service and University of Huddersfield Buildings Project at Huddersfield Library?

West Yorkshire Archive Service will be giving an Introduction to the Poor Law on Wednesday June 9 at Huddersfield Library and finally on June 11 workhouse expert Peter Higginbotham will be delivering a fascinating talk Gruelling Experiences – Three Centuries of The Workhouse at Huddersfield Town Hall.
