Kirklees Council is to fork out £2,400 for a new community notice board and bin.

That is the amount that has been quoted by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, who defended the amount it will cost to buy them and put them in place outside Cowlersley Community Centre.

It comes after the council housing provider, which can carry out work on behalf of the council, was given the go-ahead at the recent Kirklees Rural district committee.

A total of £1,900 will be spent on installing a weatherproof notice board, while £500 will be used to buy a ‘durable’ bin at the Cowlersley Lane site.

The news comes not long after Mirfield Town Council quoted over £500 to put a bin in the area’s Knowl Park to councillor James Taylor.

He said he did not understand why it cost so much.

The Examiner did a basic online search and found similar boards and bins for sale for in between £1085.90 to £1,418.

But a spokeswoman for KNH, which is expected to install them shortly, said that the costs included bespoke features not listed on the website.

She said: “When we buy equipment and services, we always try to get the best value for money by choosing suppliers who can provide the right products at the right price.

“As many people will know from their own experience, durable, long lasting products aren’t always the cheapest – and the cheapest products often aren’t good value in the long run.

“The price includes the notice board, posts, base, painting, sign writing, delivery and VAT – features that aren’t included in basic online pricing.

“If we find a similar product at a better price, then we will get it.”

Councillors voted to back the plans, which will be funded out of the council’s revenue budget.

They said that it will be a welcome addition to the community.

Golcar councillor Christine Iredale, said: “Cowlersley often gets overlooked and I think that it will help people to better advertise their community events.”
