IT’S still unclear if the Olympics will leave a lasting legacy in terms of inspiring children into sport in the medium and long-term nationwide.

But they have certainly had a big impact on one part of our news patch.

West Mills Playing Fields off Huddersfield Road in Mirfield had been under threat from developers for many years.

But now, thanks to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics legacy, the 29 teams and almost 400 players who regularly turn out there know these well-known playing fields will remain as ... playing fields.

Sport is important to thousands of Huddersfield people’s lives week in and week out. It provides fitness, relaxation, camaraderie and a social outlet.

It’s the very stuff of life itself and that’s why people fight so hard to preserve their playing fields for now and future generations.
