Elland

Greater Elland Historical Society open their research room today and on Thursday for people to delve into local history. Volunteers can help people research stories, events or even family links. It’s at Elland Library from 2-4pm.

Overgate Hospice hosts its Light Up A Life memorial service this Sunday. The special memorial service takes place at Halifax Minster at 2.30pm.

On Friday, December 7, from 2.30pm-5pm Elland town centre will become a hub of pre-Christmas fun. Children from three local schools will sing Christmas carols around the tree in Coronation Street – and there’s a visit from Santa.

Calderdale

This Saturday there will be a charity Christmas craft and gift fair with a Santa’s Grotto, in aid of the National Association of Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. It takes place at the North Bridge Leisure Centre and admission is £1. Stalls include handmade items such as jewellery, knits, sews, cards, preserves and items from Body Shop, Phoenix Trading, Forever Living and Avon. It runs from 10am-4.30pm.

The Piece Hall Christmas lights switch on takes place this Saturday from midday until 5pm with live entertainment.

The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield and District Branch hosts an open day this Sunday, with Christmas stalls and gifts for your pets. It’s open 11am-3pm at the animal centre on Wade Street, Halifax.

Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees hosts a Carol Concert on Tuesday next week. It features the Calderdale Senior Citizens Orchestra and the Festive Voices Singers. Tickets are £5 from Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees Offices or on 01422 252040. It takes place at 7pm at S. Jude’s Church, Skircoat Green.

Find out about planned development in the Ripponden area this Thursday, at Ripponden School Hall. The drop-in sessions will allow people to discover what Calderdale Council’s development plans are for the next decade. It runs from 4.30pm to 6.45pm.

Rastrick

This Saturday the New Road Family Church at Rastrick will host an afternoon tea with stalls from 2.30pm. Then on Sunday there will be a church service with a collection of toys to be donated to the Salvation Army to give out to children at Christmas. The service begins at 2.15pm.

Southowram

Southowram Horticultural and Allotments Society holds its annual meeting tomorrow,Wednesday, at 8pm at the New Street Centre, Southowram. It’s open to all.

Boothtown & Southowram Methodist Church holds a charity coffee morning on Tuesday next week (December 4) from 10am-midday at Southowram Community Centre, Law Lane. There’s no set charge but donations are welcome to Overgate Hospice. November’s event raised £133 for the Royal British Legion.
