IT IS the nightmare scenario that any householder would dread.
But it seems that the horror of having raw sewage in your house is not quite as rare an occurrence as we would hope.
According to Yorkshire Water more than 1,000 properties in the region were internally flooded last year as a result of sewers being blocked. And they received over 2,500 calls from customers in the Huddersfield area relating to sewer flooding issues.
But the problem, it seems, is often caused by people disposing of nappies and sanitary products down the loo.
Every day thousands of these items and others such as wet wipes and cotton wool buds have to be removed from waste water entering treatment works across the region.
There’s a simple solution. Don’t do it.
And if you are in any doubt about the potential consequences, take a look at the videos on www.yorkshirewater.com/Huddersfield and see what can happen to homes when blockages become an issue.
If they don’t convince you that your toilet is not a general waste disposal unit, then nothing will.
