LIGHTS, camera, action. At last, someone has taken the initiative and organised the film festival that Holmfirth deserves.

The Holme Valley town was after all the home of movies from the very earliest days with pioneering photographer James Bamforth making short films in the late 19th century.

Holmfirth was very much on the silent movie map and deserves to be back on the film front once again.

For a town that in recent years has been home to once of tv’s longest running comedies, Last Of The Summer Wine, it is good to see its film heritage being acknowledged.

Holmfirth Film Festival will be staged next May and will centre on the town’s Picturedrome, an important monument to the silent era that once made Holmfirth Britain’s answer to Hollywood.

What’s also great about this celebration of film is that it will not just look to the past but will feature new international films and involve students from Huddersfield’s university.

Who knows, perhaps the festival and the town will inspire a new generation of film-makers and film-goers.
