SCHOOLS are at the heart of our communities and those which succeed the best are surely those where parents, children and teachers are all working together.

At Marsden, that message has been taken on by parents – quite literally.

The village Infants School had an upstairs hall which had remained untouched for 20 years. It had been quoted £42,000 to bring the space, used for PE and after-school clubs, back into good order.

With budgets tight, the school knew it needed help. And when it asked for it, parents were quick to step forward.

Using online technology, the message came over loud and clear. And it seems that Marsden has plenty of committed parents willing to roll up their sleeves and help out.

In just a matter of weeks, materials and skills were sourced and many volunteered their time to create a bright and cheerful space for their children to enjoy.

Little wonder that the school’s head Frances Swallow can’t praise the community enough.

For local volunteers have not only created a great space for their school but a feeling of real community and what can be achieved for the benefit of all when everyone works together.
