THE bid to turn a former landmark pub into a community hub seems to be going from strength to strength in Calderdale.

Residents living in Holywell Green were dismayed to say the least at plans to redevelop the historical Holy Well Inn into flats.

They rallied round to form an action group to put a brake on the plans. They not only did that, they halted them and are now fundraising to turn the pub into a community facility.

And, as from day one on this, they are not thinking small and have organised a gig at Halifax Victoria Theatre in October featuring big names from music including multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter Al Stewart and Mark Griffiths, bass player with Cliff Richard and the Shadows who was also a member of Matthews Southern Comfort.

This dedicated group are proving that if you think big, you’ll achieve big and ultimately reach the ambitious goal you’ve set yourself. They have also harnessed the power of the new Localism Act in their favour.

It would have been all-too-easy for the villagers to sit back, accept what was happening to their pub and lose it forever.

It also shows what can happen if people show true grit and determination and are prepared to spend the time and effort rallying support for a cause they all believe in.
