THE scheme to build multi-million pound sports facilities in Skelmanthorpe looks like it may be getting back on track.

After a long-running dispute lasting 12 years, Kirklees Council has agreed to release a key piece of land after a disagreement with a businessman finally came to an end.

Those years have been wasted. Now it is important the scheme is moved forward quickly.

As Winston Churchill famously said: “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.’’

And that it clearly the case here. All those years have now passed so let’s hope it is far fewer before the new sports and recreational facilities are built and benefiting the people who live in that area ... and beyond.

It’s hoped building work can start within 12 months, but with the organisers now seeking £1.8m funding for phase one of the project the fear has to be more delays could lie ahead.

The money would need to come through grants and the project will be a massive boost to sports organisations, schools and will get people involved in cycling and orienteering.

Everyone who will benefit must now rally round to help those who are at the heart of this scheme to make it become a reality.
