PUPILS are celebrating their success in a national athletics competition.

A team from Lindley Junior School were named winners of the West Yorkshire Sportshall Primary final.

The event was the culmination of a huge athletics competition programme.

This involved 6,000 young people and 400 schools across the county.

Children competed in field events including long jump, standing triple jump, javelin, chest push, vertical jump and speed bounce.

They also raced in team track events.

At the championships, at Northbridge Leisure Centre in Halifax, 10 schools battled it out for the top title.

It was run by West Yorkshire sport and competition managers who have co-ordinated local rounds, together with young leaders from local schools.

The team from Lindley claimed the title for the third time, winning by over 70 points.

Their score also put them top of the Yorkshire and Humberside Sportshall of Fame as well as the UK Primary Sportshall of Fame.

Vicki Mortimer, PE leader from the school, said: “We worked extremely hard to reach the county finals, again.

“It was a really exciting, high-paced event and the atmosphere was electric.

“I am thrilled by all our achievements and very proud of every single member of our team,” Vicki added.
