LORRIES over 3.5 tonnes will be banned from four Lindley side streets for 13 weeks, while part of Halifax Road is closed for gas works.

From April 13, trucks will be banned from Weatherhill Road in Birchencliffe, Laund Road in Salendine Nook, Moorlands Road in Mount and Crosland Road in Lindley.

Kirklees Council made the move to prevent ‘rat runs’, stopping lorries cutting through Lindley to get back onto Halifax Road after the roadworks.

Residents of these quiet streets will be cheering the council’s decision to preserve their peace.

They will be hoping that the council will monitor the situation and take action if lorry drivers flout the ban.

But lorry drivers will not be happy. They simply want the quickest route – side street or not.

It is not their fault that roadworks have to be conducted, but it is they who will face the inconvenience of a long detour.

In any situation there will always be losers, but this time the council appears to have tried to take the fairest and most appropriate action possible to cope with unavoidable work that was always going to cause major disruption for motorists.
