A plaque to honour fallen soldier Tom Wroe will be unveiled on the anniversary of his death.

The stone plaque, dedicated to the Meltham-born rifleman, will be revealed at St Bartholomew’s Church on September 15.

Pte Wroe, 18, was shot dead by a rogue Afghan policeman in Checkpoint Tora, in Nahr-e Saraj, on September 15, 2012.

The unveiling will follow a march at 2.15pm, with members of New Mill, Meltham and Golcar Royal British Legions, from the Carlile Institute, Huddersfield Road, to the church on Greens End Road.

Tom’s sister Demi will unveil the plaque on the day which has been organised by Pte Wroe’s dad, Mick, his mum Claire, Meltham Vicar, Rev Maureen Reed, and Duke Bob Heron, the assistant regimental secretary of the Yorkshire Regiment in the old West Riding.

Mick, who served in the now defunct Duke of Wellington Regiment, said: “I can’t fault the people of Meltham; words can’t describe how good they’ve been to our family. The love they’ve shown Tom has been outstanding.

“It will be a sad day but it’ll be a proud day and it will bring some comfort to us”.
