MIRFIELD is to honour the armed forces by signing up to a new trade initiative.
The town aims to be the first in West Yorkshire to join the ‘Heroes are Welcome’ initiative.
Started in Scarborough, it aims to encourage businesses to show their support for servicemen and women and their families.
By signing up to the project, traders are giving their backing to the armed forces and may even offer discounts or special deals.
Mirfield Town Council is backing the creation of a local scheme, on the suggestion of Tory councillor Martyn Bolt.
“Mirfield is proud of its service personnel and this is a way of demonstrating that,” said Clr Bolt. “Some times in the past, particularly in the United States over Vietnam, the forces have lost respect, but all that has gone now.
“This is an opportunity for Mirfield to lead the way, in the same way we became the first ‘free trade’ town in Kirklees.”
Mayor-elect Clr David Pinder, a former serviceman himself, will visit town centre businesses soon to promote the initiative.
