MIRFIELD council offices could be sold off by Kirklees Council, it has been revealed.

The town centre building, a base for Mirfield Town Council, has been gradually emptied of Kirklees services.

Now, the Examiner can reveal, Kirklees is looking at selling off the building.

Apart from the town council, which has an office staffed part-time, the only other body using the building is the GMB union.

In the past the offices had a Kirklees counter service for inquiries and bill payments.

The Examiner understands the future of the prominent building is under review and is likely to go inside three years.

The Mayor of Mirfield and town council chairman, Clr David Pinder, said: “I have no doubt that at some stage in the near future the building will be sold off.

“That is, of course, unless – against expectations – they decide to move something else into the building.

“I cannot believe they will allow us to stay there with so much of it unoccupied.”

Clr Pinder said it was vital that the town council had an office and remained in the town centre.

“We have a clerk who has an increasing workload and it is not practical for her to work from home,” he said.

“While the town council could meet somewhere other than the existing council chamber, we would need office space.”

Clr Pinder said he believed Mirfield Library would be the ideal location for the town council.

A Kirklees spokesman said: “As part of a council-wide review of its land and property, consideration is being given to the future of the Mirfield council offices.

“The building is currently occupied by the GMB union and by the Mirfield Town Council, but is currently under-utilised and has a number of maintenance and access issues.

“Accordingly, options are being discussed with the occupants for the potential relocation of the union office and the town council.

“Consideration is also being given to what opportunities exist for possible re-use or disposal of the asset. At this stage these are exploratory options only.”
