AN abandoned filling station, earmarked for a Tesco, could be handed over to villagers.
The supermarket giant was initially denied permission to build at the former Jet petrol station on North Road, Kirkburton.
But it won approval to build one of its Express stores on the compact plot of land at a Planning Inspectorate appeal in 2009.
A year later Tesco said it was reviewing its proposal but no new plan has appeared.
The company has failed to confirm if it still plans to use the land, but in late 2010 it allowed the site to be opened up for parking.
Now local MP Simon Reevell has revealed he has asked Tesco to hand the site over to villagers.
He has received permission to continue using the site as a car park for shoppers.
Having received further permission to tidy the area, the Dewsbury MP and his team got to work to remove the unsightly railings surrounding the site.
Simon’s proposal that the area be given to the village is currently waiting to go before Tesco’s main board.
