UP-and-coming MP Shahid Malik mimicked the new President of the United States when he joined in decorating work at a new community centre.

Much like Barack Obama, Mr Malik showed he was not afraid of a bit of DIY when he lent a hand to paint the walls of the soon to be launched Savoy Youth and Community Centre in Skelmanthorpe.

More than five years after the £600,000 idea was first mooted, the major building is now complete and the internal work well underway. The next important phase includes the installation of eco-friendly ground source heat pumps to provide underfloor heating.

The association hopes to achieve ‘carbon neutral status’ and other green features of the building include solar panels and Suntube windows.

Association chairman Vanessa Marsden said: "Mr Malik had a good look round and he’s been generally encouraging.

"The support of the (Denby Dale) area committee who have donated £48,500, the parish council, £26,000 and Kirklees Young People’s Service, £90,000 means that the opening of the centre in June 2009 is now achievable. "The centre is to be open six days a week with activities for all ages and community cafe.

"Skelmanthorpe Youth and Community Association want to thank all who have contributed so far and encourage local people to come and join the fundraising (£21,000 is still needed) and volunteering."

When complete the facility will boast a new sports hall, club room, meeting room and five-a-side outdoor pitch.

Several local groups are already signed up to use the facilities including Kirklees’ Youth Services, Connexions, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Urban Dance, Day Services for the Disabled and the Townswomen’s Guild

Chairman of Denby Dale Parish Council, Clr Eddie Shaw, praised the group’s efforts.

He said: "Denby Dale Parish Council has, for many years worked hard to support projects aimed at offering facilities for young people and we are proud to support the Skelmanthorpe Youth and Community Association because we recognise that the new centre will be of enormous benefit to young people across the parish."

The first fundraising event is a Valentine’s Disco at the Denby Dale Pie Hall. Tickets from Ruffles hairdressers in the village.
