THE death sentence should be brought back as soon as possible. Not just for multiple murders as in the Wright case, but in all cases where a life is taken.

Idle John

THE recent spate of senseless killings by drunken or drug-snorting scum shows that the lack of a real deterrent is letting yobs get away quite literally with murder. There is little thought given to the victims’ families and the judicial system seems biased in favour of the offender’s 'human rights' and neglects the rights of the law-abiding citizen.

Dismayed of Dalton

THERE are quite a few people who would disagree with the death penalty, Stefan Kisko, Sally Clark, the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four are just some of them that come to mind.

SO do you have any evidence that the death penalty actually deters crime? Do those countries that adopt it have a drop in crime and murder? I’ve always imagined that those who kill are usually either mentally disturbed and so don't think rationally about crime and punishment, or think they are going to get away with it and thus avoid any punishment of any kind. I’ve also always thought that the death penalty is too easy on the criminal – surely locking them up for a long spell in an unpleasant environment is a better option (and I don't subscribe to the old rubbish that prison life is easy). Giving them time to repent at their leisure is far harder...

WHY not adopt the American system where they are held on death row pending appeal? Or does that not appeal to the liberal tastes exhibited on here either.
