WORKERS at a Huddersfield group of companies were all fired up when they took part in a charity dragon boat race – and raised hundreds for good causes.

The Myers Group, based at Barr Street, off Leeds Road, was invited by Huddersfield and Wakefield Rotary Club to put a team together to compete in the annual race at Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield.

The team, named Mighty Myers, was led by captain Michael Gorman, technical sales manager at Myers Group company Johnsons Wellfield Quarries.

And they went on to win the competition after qualifying for the final by coming fourth in their heat.

They also raised £829 by their efforts – 40% of which has gone to specific Rotary Club charities – leaving £497.40 which the Myers Group has presented to its preferred charity, Kirkwood Hospice at Dalton.

A spokesman for the Myers Group said: “It was touch and go as to whether or not the race would take place as the week leading up to the event was the week when we had torrential rain and flooding, in the area.

“The event did go ahead despite the weather and a brilliant day was had by all.”
