ONCE again the issue of a permanent site for gypsies in Kirklees has resurfaced.

This has been rumbling on for years and Hughie Smith, chairman of the Gypsy Council, claims a base would stop taxpayers’ money being wasted on evictions and clean-ups.

But Kirklees councillor Peter McBride says the travellers who have stopped here have given themselves a bad reputation by the state they have left their temporary sites in when they have left.

But he also said the ideal solution would be a permanent site.

It’s going to be a tough call to find a site to please everyone, but perhaps a fresh search should now get underway.
