The River Colne Project, based at Slaithwaite, has been led for nine years by chairman Jo Barnes.

In that time she has overseen clean-up projects, wildflower planting, research into species living on the river banks and has engaged local adults and children in a variety of conservation activities.

She has also worked to improve access to the river along the Colne Valley, improved the Slaithwaite Spa Park area and created a ‘tree nursery’ as an educational resource.

But now, she says it is time to hand over the project to a new leader.

Mick Smith, River Colne project officer, said: “I am hugely grateful for the tireless work Jo has put in. She has been remarkable and her unwavering support has made the project the success that it is.

“This is only a small proportion of the work we have done and it makes you realise the diverse range of projects we’ve completed. It is testament to the chair and management group’s support and hard work.”

Challenges facing a new project officer include improving the River Colne between Marsden and Milnsbridge. Projects funded until August 2009 include creating better habitats for bats and white clawed crayfish.

The chairman’s role will be to direct these projects, come up with new ideas and work with volunteers and the management group to make them a reality.
