WHY is it that whenever St George’s Square is mentioned, controversy is seldom far behind?

A sharp-eyed resident spotted new signs in the revamped square, marking out various restricted zones. He asked Kirklees Council to check if the signs were legal. Quite simply, they were not.

Authorisation had not been sought from the Department of Transport to use the new signs which meant that no penalty can be enforced on motorists who ignore them.

Yes it will be put right. The correct paperwork will be sorted and the signs will then be enforceable.

Perhaps then we will all get to enjoy a Square that has had much time, money and effort spent on it and the discontent may finally start to fade into the background.
