HOLMFIRTH

The second Sunday before Lent was celebrated at Holy Trinity with a 10.30 Upper Room Service led by the Rev Keith Griffin. He spoke about God’s unconditional love for us and our love for others – especially poignant as this is National Marriage Week and, of course, Valentine’s Day tomorrow. The choir served refreshments after the service. The children decorated a cardboard wedding cake and the congregation shared the surprise cake which was inside.

The otherwise dreary weekend weather was swept aside by Neil Ward as he led worship at Holmfirth Methodist Church on Sunday. This was a family event and Neil had decked out the church with a boat, sail and fishing net. Pat read from Luke’s Gospel – the story of how the greatest possible catch of fish could be achieved at only Jesus’ direction. But the real message was one of commissioning the disciples – and indeed all Christians – to become ‘fishers of men’. Sue delivered the Old Testament reading – the commissioning of Isaiah. In a well crafted service Neil went on to impress on all those gathered the need to participate in Christian Life. Both readings recognised that at times we are all far from perfect but when we turn to God we can receive forgiveness – leaving the way clear for us to become disciples ourselves. As always, the young people joined in the celebration and praise with a variety of musical instruments – not least of which were the drums! They went on to craft fishes from coloured paper and card which were symbolically placed in the fishing net along with prayers from the congregation.
