BIRDSEDGE

Village Hall: The two man Hodgson team won the monthly quiz. The supper was appreciated by all concerned, with zero wastage. The next quiz will be on Friday, August 28.

The Car Boot Sale at Fairleigh Farm on Sunday was slightly quieter than the previous one, but despite a chilly wind both sellers and buyers were happy. A good sign is when people sit at the picnic tables enjoying the refreshments. This was the last such event planned for 2009.

The first Tea Dance will be remembered for the hilarity rather than good technique. The exercise was a good excuse to enjoy the cream teas. Another will be held in September – all welcome.

An information event will be held in the village hall on Friday August 21 from 10am – 2pm. The Pension Service, Gateway to Care, Kirklees Benefit Advice, Anchor, Police, Energy Saving Trust, =2 0Making Space, CAB, Physical Activity Development, Revenues and Benefits and Lazarus Mobility will have people there to give help and advice. Teas and coffees free with a small charge for snacks that will be available throughout. Ring 01484 604289 for further information.

Church: Pat and Tom Wood took the Family Service. Quizzes, puzzles and a sketch were used to help understand the story of Nicodemus John 3 1-15. Everyone learned verse 16 of John 3 ‘God sent his son so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.’ Being ‘born again’ was explained. Next week’s service will be a Worship Service.

After the service refreshments were served to the worshippers by Mrs Jean Sutcliffe and Mrs Joanne Smith. Mrs Doreen Barraclough was the organist.

The Burton Friendship Club met at The Hub last week for a late celebration of Yorkshire Day. They took for their theme, All Things Yorkshire and enjoyed Yorkshire pudding and parkin. Mrs Jean Sutcliffe gave a short quiz on Yorkshire dialect and sayings and Miss Sandra Spivey brought along some of her tea towels which had the same theme. Music for the afternoon was provided by a CD of Yorkshire Choirs and the famous Brighouse and Rastrick Band. The raffle prize was won by Mrs Mary Slack and Mrs Hazel Ramsay gave a vote of thanks to members who had contributed to the entertainment.
