BROCKHOLES

The October annual meeting of Brockholes WI took place in the Methodist church parlour. Reports and thanks for a successful year were given by President Zita Crossley, secretary Elizabeth Mosley and Margaret Brinley. Chrystine Hazel gave special thanks to the committee for their work over the past 12 months. Then followed nominations and business for next years officials and committee. A faith supper was followed by a game of bingo and a DVD of some ducklings hatching and being released into the wild by Sheila Hirst.

Sunday service at the Methodist Church was led by the Rev Tim Moore. The organist was Michael Brown.

Parish communion at St George's Church was celebrated by the Rev David Barnes, who spoke on being prepared for change. Rosalind Watt read the lesson and Elizabeth Mosley was the server. Verena Wood played the organ.

HOLMBRIDGE

Holmbridge Women's Institute members met under the chairmanship of Barbara Newman. The Camera Club met to view prints with constructive criticism from Geoff France and Phil Hack.

The Rev Geoff Bamford led midweek communion at St David's Church when Ian Gold read the lesson. Meetings of the Over 60s, Monkey Business and Tumble Tots groups were held during the week. Friday evening prayers were led by Carolyn Burley.

An autumn fair held at St David's Church raised £1,250 for funds.

Early communion at St David's Church was conducted by the Rev Roger Nelson. Parish Eucharist, which was led by the Rev Geoff Banks, included the baptism of Corey John Lee Shooter. Lessons were read by Glenys McGuire and the chalice was administered by Ian Macdonald. The creche and junior church were led by Judith Roberts and Helen Milner. Eddie Purcell was the organist.

HOLMFIRTH

Sunday Morning praise and worship was led by Elyjoy and the band at Holmfirth Christian Centre's Sunday morning service held at the Phoenix Centre. Carole Paxman preached on Encountering a living God, looking at ways in which one can draw closer to God and allow Him to draw closer to you. Explorers (the children), led by Caroline Godin, looked at the story of the Samaritan women at the well (John 4) and how Jesus spoke to her, demonstrating how He broke down barriers, saying she could receive from him living water that would quench her thirst. The children each got a bottle of water and put scripture references on them.

On Wednesday evening praise and worship was led by Paul Jackson and was titled Inspire 5. Following the teaching received from the dynamic bible study sessions, five members of the church spoke about the scriptures they had been led to by God and what challenges had faced them and encouraged us with what God was saying through them.

HONLEY

On Tuesday October 14, the Trinity Church, Honley Women’s Fellowship meeting was addressed by Michael Smith, a volunteer member of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This wonderful charity exists to assist men, women and children who find themselves in sometimes horrendous situations out of reach (or out of time) of any other emergency service. The Air Ambulance in the UK began its work in Cornwall in 1987and the aim of the Air Ambulance for the future is to have enough money to fly seven days a week instead of five and to have 'winch facilities' of their own- this would cost £50,000.There are currently 26 Air Ambulances operating in the UK.

Family communion at St Mary's Church was led by the Rev David Barnes. Richard Hay read the lesson. Pat and Cliff Green led intercessions. During the afternoon, the Rev David Barnes baptised Grace Frances Briony Greaves, the daughter of Susan and Howard.; Nell Hirst, the daughter of Adele and David; and Thomas Muckle, the son of Sarah and Timothy, Pat Green read the lesson and the pianist for the day was Jean Chadwick.

UPPERTHONG

The Rev Keith Griffith led midweek communion at St John's Church.

A harvest supper was held in the village hall, which included a two-course meal followed by entertainment by Rod, Dave, Josh, Ellie and John Senior. Proceeds from the event went to church funds.

Family communion at St John's Church was conducted by the Rev Geoff Banks, who read the gospel, preached the sermon and was celebrant. The readers were Hilary Broadbent and Graham Dawson. Ray Thompson led prayers and assisted with the chalice. Hazel Thompson was the organist. Coffee and biscuits were served afterwards by Ruth Schorah.

WOOLDALE

The service on Sunday at Wooldale Methodist Free Church was led by David Johnson who took readings from Psalm 139 and from John 14, verse 1-14. In his sermon he asked: do we really have love for our fellow members or do we just like them? He also asked the question who do we serve once we have left church. The organist was Peter Coldwell.

The Rev Laura Hardy led morning worship at the Methodist Church, when the sacrament was administered. The organist was Hazel Booth. The evening service was led by Paul Round when Sue Ogden played the organ. The monthly social event was a talk on fruit and vegetables by John Mason.
