IT comes to something when parking is to be completely banned outside a school.

But that’s the drastic action that seems set to be taken on the roads around Fixby Junior and Infant School after a long history of ill-feeling between residents who live there and parents who park badly or inconsiderately to drop their children off in the mornings and pick them up in the afternoons.

Now Kirklees Council plans to ban parents from stopping on stretches of three roads in a bid to solve the problem and improve road safety.

The parents can’t say they haven’t been warned. The Examiner has done stories before and pupils have even gone round with police officers to issue tickets to cars parked illegally.

The bad parking was potentially putting youngsters at risk – yet it was the parents doing the parking. A classic case of not seeing the obvious.

Perhaps other parents who park badly outside schools should regard this as a warning. A total ban could be enforced at their school too if they don’t mend their ways.

It should never come to this, of course. People should have the commonsense to park sensibly and safely – especially outside schools.

Now the wayward motorists heading for Fixby Junior and Infant School will have to leave home earlier to find a safe spot further away from the school – something they should have done in the first place.
