ABDUL Hafiz’s Los Angeles style mansion has certainly caused controversy in BIrkby.

Many residents certainly didn’t like the look of the imposing building but planning permission was passed.

Yet it turned out it was built too high and Kirklees Planning Sub-committee ordered him to reduce the roof height.

But he is asking the committee to do a U-turn on this decision and, in return, he will reduce the height of the garage and swimming pool.

Many eyes will be watching this decision – many obviously remembering the planning problems at Castle Hill.

It’s hard to see that Mr Hafiz has an argument.

Planning rules are clear and should be enforced without any room for negotiation or bargaining at a later date when they have been flouted.

To do so would be to set a dangerous precedent.
