RECENTLY in this column we ran a series of pictures featuring life in Salendine Nook in the fifties, sixties and seventies.

The pictures were kindly submitted by David J Smithies, a Salendine Nook resident and keen photographer.

The pictures included one of my Examiner colleague and friend John Avison, aged nine, along with his five-year-old brother Anthony, enjoying a day out with the Salendine Nook Baptist Church crèche.

David has since submitted three more pictures of his beloved ‘Nook’.

The main picture reproduced here shows the Avison brothers’ father George, seen left, who was a teacher of the junior department of Salendine Nook Baptist Church Sunday School .

With him are the boys in his charge, including Tim Heeley and Michael Hoyle, and fellow teacher Trevor Crosland.

This picture is dated September 1962.

David also sent in the fascinating image of Salendine Nook Secondary School under construction in the spring of 1957. The picture was taken from Longwood Edge.

The third picture is of Huddersfield's pair of steel houses – 31-33 Laund Road, Salendine Nook, taken in 1989.
