I AM appalled that Kirklees Council has stuck to its decision to close Cambridge Road Nursery. Since it opened in 1970 it has allowed many parents, including myself, to pursue careers.

My daughter, who is now 13, attended Cambridge Road Nursery from the age of seven months until she started school full time. It was convenient for me to have my child in day care within walking distance of my place of work. We were able to leave in the mornings and return in the evenings together.

What more satisfaction could a working parent ask for?

The number of children on the nursery’s books has dwindled because of all the scaremongering about its future. What parent wants to place their child, only to move them elsewhere a few months later?

Last September council leader Clr Robert Light was quoted as saying that “the easy decision would have been to close all three nurseries”. Easy for who? Women of child-bearing age who want their cake and eat it? I am one of them; I want to work!

Clr Light also stated that in the past Kirklees had not listened to consultations. All I can see is that regardless of who is in power we, the ‘‘ordinary people’’, are still being ridden roughshod over.

I heard more than once how the council must support private sector nurseries.

Well, excuse my ignorance, but if these privately run nurseries cannot sustain themselves then why are they in business?

The fees charged at these places are astronomical, yet they cannot stand on their own feet. Does charity not begin at home?

It has long been believed that the land on which Cambridge Road Nursery stands has been earmarked for different projects within the town.

The day the nursery closes let’s see how long it will be before the contractors move in to demolish it.

I sincerely hope members of other parties within the council do not support this move and that we can still hope Cambridge Road Nursery can be saved!
