THE film The King’s Speech is not the first time stammering has been brought into the public spotlight.
Thankfully time has moved on and people’s prejudices against this and many other disabilities are fading.
But still more needs to be done to make the disabled an important part of our society.
Integration has become a buzz word in recent years, but then this has sometimes been offset by health and safety regulations so disabled children, for example, have not been allowed to join mainstream after school clubs because the facilities and support is not there for them.
In this harsh economic era there are concerns that the support and services for the disabled and vulnerable may be reduced or even axed altogether.
This would only serve to marginalise them once more within society and we could start to return to the bad old days.
