Marsden’s sporting heroes of the past teamed up for a special reunion event to raise money for a well-loved football club.

More than 60 players from Marsden FC who were part of the club during the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s gathered at the Mount Road clubhouse to raise a glass to its continuing success since it began more than 100 years ago.

The event, which was the first of its kind since 1998, was organised by former club president Brian Irving, who began to chronicle the history of the village team in 2012.

Those who attended the lively event on May 9, which included a raffle and a finger buffet, donated a total of £258 to the club, which will be used to help fund maintenance at the summer ground in Fall Lane.

According to Brian, who was involved with Marsden FC from 1962 until 2000, the club went into hibernation in the war period before hitting its peak in the 1950s.

Although it was one of the worst in the league in the 1970s, it rose to prominence again two decades later and won the West Riding Premier division twice.

It now has several teams, including a first team, one for under-13s, 16s and a new women’s team.

Brian Irving said: “The night proved to be a great success both in terms of enjoyment for the oldies who turned up for the club’s coffers.

“I’d like to thank present club members Julie, Allan and Rachel for their help.
