IT was a red letter day last Saturday for the senior citizens of the district.

The 99th Denby Dale and Cumberworth Gathering and Concert was held at Denby Dale Pie Hall with around 70 guests being catered for.

The people of Denby Dale, Cumberworth and the surrounding areas including Birdsedge, High Flatts, and Upper and Lower Denby enjoyed activities arranged especially for them.

Through the generosity of the local community, who had donated an outstanding amount this year, everyone had a splendid time, with Holme Band providing the entertainment.

The hosts were former Kirklees mayor and councillor Colin Watson and his wife Doreen. The Grace was said by the deacon Con Taylor.

The afternoon began at 4pm with the tea and went on until the early evening with people enjoying the activities.

The event is financed mainly by door-to-door collections and the committee wish to express their sincerest thanks to the public. While every effort is made to ensure that the treat is successful, most of the success is due to the local people who willingly contribute to this annual event.

Plans are already in hand to make the centenary gathering next year an event to savour.
