Plans to convert a former shop into a Kurdish community centre have been withdrawn in Fartown.

Mr S S Najim, applied to Kirklees Council back in May to change the use of the former Joke Shop above Autospares in 44 Bradford Road into a Kurdish Community Centre.

The plans would have seen the first floor converted into a recreational space with small kitchen and soft seating.

But the applicant was forced to withdraw the plans due to failing to provide further information surrounding noise concerns and other issues.

Architect Keith Womersley acting on behalf of the owner said: “It was submitted for the Kurdish people living near there as the current facility nearby is a bit dilapidated.

“We put in for planning permission for change of use.

“It was to create a ‘low key’ area for games and socialising. There was to be no alcohol.

“But the planning department noted that there could be a noise problem and asked the owner to look into it.”

Mr Womersley said unfortunately this didn’t happen and the application had to be withdrawn as it was ‘out of time’ to be considered.

The owner now has 12 months to re-submit plans under the existing planning application.
