POLICE have launched a ‘Friday Night Initiative’ to combat troublesome youths in Kirkheaton.

Now they are urging parents in the area to back the project by keeping a check on where there youngsters are on Friday nights.

A police spokesman said: “Over the past few months, Friday evenings from 7 o’clock onwards have been a nightmare for the residents of Kirkheaton.

“Groups of 20 to 30 youths aged between 13 and 18 have been gathering outside the shops in the centre of the village, drinking, making a noise, causing damage and generally being a nuisance.

“We are doing our utmost to settle this down and we are working with the local youth clubs and parents trying to stem this problem.

“The youths are coming into the village from Dalton, Lepton, Almondbury as well as being local. Operations are being set up by the police to disrupt and find out who should and shouldn’t be there.

“We must stress that parents must be aware of where their children are on a Friday evening. If they say they are with friends please check, there are a few people in this crowd who I’m sure you would not like your child to be hanging around with,” the spokesman added.
