SOCCER is never far from the headlines, even when the new season is still weeks away.

Fans of all clubs, from the Premiership right down to those playing on the muddy playing fields of Moldgreen, are anticipating the return of on the field action.

But amid all the talk of training and transfers, another thorny subject occupying the minds of at least two sets of football fans in Yorkshire is policing. Or rather the heavy-handed over-policing of a match in Huddersfield.

West Yorkshire Police have been criticised for the strict measures they imposed when Town played host to Hull City at the John Smith’s Stadium.Their insistence on strict ticketing and travel arrangements prompted major protests in both west and east Yorkshire.

Now it seems, many of those protests were well-founded. A series of emails reveal the police were advised they had no basis on which to impose such rigid regulations.

Football fans from the clubs see it as a slur on their name and many will agree with them.
