Youngsters from Rowley Lane Junior, Infant and Nursery School in Lepton paid a visit to Kirkwood Hospice recently to perform a number of uplifting songs for patients.

More than 40 children gathered in the hospice gardens to sing their hearts out, tackling renditions of famous songs which were all picked by them.

The pupils, aged between 7 and 11 had been giving up their lunch times each Wednesday last term to rehearse a host of songs, including Pharell Williams’ Happy, Titanium by David Guetta and Everything Has Changed, originally performed by Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.

Many day patients from the Support and Therapy Centre as well as a number of patients and families currently on the in-patient unit came outside to enjoy the fine weather and the fabulous harmonies.

Jo Scott, one of four teachers who run the Glee Club at Rowley Lane J, I & N School was delighted that the children were able to perform for patients at the hospice.

She said: “It’s great to come down with the children to do something nice for the patients.

“We’ve been down a few times in recent years and it’s lovely to give people in the local community the opportunity to hear us perform.

“It’s also great for the kids to be able to perform in front of a live audience after rehearsing for such a long time. They had all worked really hard all term.”

Alex Krysinski, writer and artist in residence at Kirkwood, watched the performance with many of the patients and families who came out to the gardens.

She said: “It was a fabulous performance and will have brought a smile to a lot of our patients’ faces. There were a lot of people listening along, even if they weren’t well enough to come outside to watch.”
