Pupils were inspired to think sky-high by a mountaineer.

Rastrick High School and Sixth Form College recently held its annual presentation evening where guest speaker Bonita Norris gave an inspirational and motivating talk after becoming the youngest woman to climb Everest aged just 22

The event, hosted by the headteacher Steve Evans, saw GCSE and A-Level pupils return from university, college or jobs to celebrate their achievements.

Mr Evans said: “This special occasion highlights the school’s stunning academic successes of the past academic year.

“It’s great to see so many students receiving awards for not just their superb academic achievements, but their dedication to improving the school as a whole; through supporting their fellow students and members of the local community.”

After hearing from Ms Norris, who said she herself had been inspired by a lecture, the prizes were handed out. Marian Eastwood, president of the Rotary Club of Brighouse presented prizes on the club’s behalf.

GCSE high achiever and current Sixth Form student, Kate Pritchard, received the prize for outstanding effort; Rebecca Morris’ success at the National Poetry Awards was recognised with the special achievement award, and Will Parkin scooped the outdoor pursuits award for his contribution in PE and sport in school.

Paul Shaw represented the Rastrick Grammar School Foundation by presenting the prize for commitment and endeavour to Olenka Heppleston, who returned from University where she is studying law and business.

Chair of Governor’s, Duncan Brundell, awarded Andrew Ball the prize for service to the school for outstanding achievement, effort and contribution to school life, particularly through school sport as he played and coached younger pupils. He has also completed a sky dive and held a charity party to raise over £6,000 for Bipolar UK in memory of his mum.

The David Wilby Prize dates from the 1960s and is presented by an old boy of the grammar school to commemorate his links with the school and the Old Rastrickian Association. It was awarded to Amy Plowman, who has completed the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and was former head girl.

The George Aldersley Cup for achievement in sport was awarded to Bradley Birkhead, an excellent all round sportsman. He can now be seen on the other side of the world hitting tons for Clyde Cougars in Southeast Melbourne.

The Clay Memorial Prize for academic achievement was presented to Dennis Rimmer who used his time to help others.
