RECORD numbers of children flocked to a play day event.

A total of 140 youngsters descended on Denby Dale and Skelmanthorpe Children’s Centre for a host of fun activities.

The event, in celebration of National Play Day 2012, featured workers from Kirklees Council, the police, Denby Dale Library, Jobcentre Plus and Purple Dog Training Company.

Children enjoyed a bouncy castle, face painting, balloon modelling, story time, den building, making camp fires, pony rides, as well as taking part in general outdoor play activities.

Denby Dale Tory, Clr Jim Dodds, attended the event, organised by Children's Centre manager, Emma Doughty. He said: “This was a really great day and was attended by over 100 children and parents which reflects the good work that children centres are doing, particularly in rural areas where it can be difficult for parents to meet other parents with children of a similar age.

“What was really pleasing to see was the multi-agency work taking place and the enthusiasm shown by them all. The Denby Dale centre is a credit to our area and I would like to thank Emma and all her staff for the hard work they are putting in on behalf of parents and children.”
