THOUSANDS of Huddersfield families face a rise in their housing rents.

Kirklees Council is set to agree to a 3.9% rise – meaning an extra £264 a year for tenants of council houses.

And a change in the payments system means families will no longer have the “rent holidays” previously enjoyed.

Up to now they make 49 weekly payments over a 12-month period but from April, they will be making 53 payments. The weekly amount paid out will remain roughly the same but the increase will be spread over the year’s payments.

A rise for renting a domestic garage is expected soon.
