HUNDREDS of people will step back in time later this year.

Meadow Court Care Home in Slaithwaite is hosting an open day with a 1920s theme this summer.

Last year’s Second World War fundraiser attracted hundreds of people to the nursing home on Meal Hill Lane at Hill Top.

This year’s open day will be based on the Roaring Twenties – the era of jazz, Charleston dancing and flapper dresses.

Lesley Bamforth, activity co-ordinator at the care home, said: “We went to a fancy dress shop and there were lots of Charleston dresses and that’s what inspired us.

“All the staff will be getting dressed up in flapper dresses with feathers in their hair.

“Our residents are very much looking forward to it. The Twenties music is their type of music and they all know the Charleston.”

Slaithwaite Band will play at the open day, which begins at 2pm on Saturday, July 7. There will also be a barbecue, cream teas, tombola, stalls and a coconut shy at the event.

Lesley hopes this year’s open day will be as successful as last year’s Second World War-themed event, which included period dress, an air raid siren and even an old Army jeep.

She said: “It was a very big event last year which was very well-attended. We were lucky to have some fantastic weather.”

The annual open day helps raise money for activities for the 32 residents at the care home.

“We made more than £1,000 profit last year,” said Lesley.

“We have regular craft activities and entertainment.

“We also go on trips to places like Marsden Moor, Standedge Tunnel and the Great Western pub outside Marsden.”
