Thursday night saw the Year Six children at Rowley Lane Junior, Infant and Nursery School, celebrate the end of their primary school career with a spectacular prom night.

After weeks of top secret planning meetings involving parents and teachers, the night was a great success.

The theme was A Black and White Night at the Movies.

Parents loaned their black and white cars bedecked with ribbons and drove the cheering and singing children in a horn honking convoy along from Lepton Highlanders on Wakefield Road, up Penistone Road, around Lepton and Fenay Bridge, and up to the school – much to the amusement of passers-by.

On arriving at the school the children walked through a white gazebo decorated with black and white bunting and manned by three very serious looking bouncers (parents in disguise).

They were then given fruit cocktails and led into the school.

The hall was beautifully decorated with shimmer curtains and streamers.

As well as a disco, magic act and images of the children throughout their school years projected on the wall; the children also had a graffiti wall on which they could write messages, a photo booth to pose for final photos of themselves ‘dressed to impress’, cupcakes, a chocolate fountain and a popcorn machine.

A games room was also set up with table tennis and Play Your Cards Right.

Needless to say, great fun was had by all, parents, teachers, and children alike.

Jenny Shore, the headteacher at Rowley Lane, was delighted with the way the night had gone and said: “The children in Year 6 have had a fantastic year and worked so hard.

“The parents wanted to give them a great send off, it really was a night to remember for children and staff alike.

“Thank you to everyone for their hard work.”

Shelley Askworth who helped to organise the event said: “It was an amazing evening with so much effort put in from so many people.

“Mind you, this year group have attained the highest SATS scores ever for Rowley Lane; they are an amazing bunch and truly deserved a fabulous send off.”
