A CAMPAIGN has been launched to give a Holme Valley beauty spot royal recognition.

Cliff Rec, above Holmfirth, has been nominated to be renamed Queen Elizabeth II Field.

If successful, the new label will preserve the popular recreation area and protect it from future development.

The national initiative is being run to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, is the scheme’s patron.

Jane Hamilton, chairman of the Friends of Cliff Rec, said: “The aim of preserving this rare piece of heathland fits beautifully with the group’s aim to encourage everyone to come and appreciate the open aspect of the Rec along with fantastic views at all times of the year.

“We need the public to vote for us in order to change the nomination into a firm designation.”

The site is owned by Kirklees Council, which nominated it as a QE2 Field.

But now public votes are needed to win the title.

People can vote online at http://www.qe2fields.com and enter the postcode HD9 1UY until next Thursday, November 17.
